Peter is a sustainability / ESG and Indigenous relations practitioner and an award-winning corporate lawyer. His practice marries 30 years of energy, M&A, corporate commercial and environmental legal work with his in-house executive experience of leading the Indigenous, sustainability reporting functions for major energy projects throughout Canada and the United States. He has had the privilege of consulting with, and learning from, over 150 Indigenous communities throughout Western Canada on major energy projects. He has been Vice President and General Counsel responsible for thousands of kilometers of pipelines and terminals throughout North America. He has also been a Partner in two of Canada’s leading national law firms.
Peter has extensive experience with major facility applications and associated environmental and permitting processes, including pipeline mega project, powerline transmission facilities and hydro, solar and wind projects. He has led regulatory applications for some of Canada’s largest energy and pipeline developments, and has represented clients before the CER, AER, AUC, BCUC, BC EAO (now the BC Energy Regulator) and the Saskatchewan MER. He has appeared before all levels of Alberta courts, led regulatory appeal processes in the Federal Court of Appeal, and appeared before B.C.’s Supreme Court.
Peter holds law degrees from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law (JD) and Osgoode Hall Law School (LLM), as well as an MBA from Haskayne School of business. Certifications include the Canadian Securities Course Certificate, University of Calgary’s Fundamentals of ESG Management, completion of multiple Global Reporting Initiative and Task Force on Climate Change courses, and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners. Peter has taught law courses at the University of Calgary and SAIT. He also has significant profit and non-profit Board of Director experience, including a three-year term as the Chair of the Calgary French and International School.
